Kutumb - Home for HIV Infected Children
Reaching Out - HIV is still a stigma in this part of the world. The brunt is borne more by the children as they are discriminated in schools and public places. Needless to say the poorest among them suffer the most. Their plight is compounded if they are orphaned by the demise of either or both parent, which is mostly the case as these children inherit the disease from their parents. With an aim to serve these children "Kutumb" identify such children with the help of doctors, counsellors, freelancing social workers etc. Each case is studied by interacting with their parent / guardian and also with the child. Thereafter, their medical papers are scrutinized and then with the consent of all, deserving among them is taken into the care of "KUTUMB"
Our Home - We provide separate, decent and hygienic accommodation for the girls and boys under our care. We have a small play ground at the backyard where the children spend their time for recreational activities. Properly ventilated bedrooms have been provided with all necessary amenities including wardrobe to store clothes, books and other amenities.
Health Focus - Children under our care require healthy diet and physical activities as much as medicine. Being HIV+ they have a weak immune system and are susceptible to life threatening diseases. To overcome this, the children are provided with a balanced nutritious diet recommended by dietician as per the need of each child. In view of the fact that most of the children are under ART (Anti Retroviral Treatment) regime, they are also susceptible to immense side effects such as ulcers, frequent diarrhoea, vomiting and giddiness which needs to be subdued with various supplements and antidotes. Supplements in the form of tonics and tablets are provided as prescribed by the doctors. Children undergo periodical medical check-ups and tests to evaluate their immunity level. The in-house nurse, takes necessary steps to prevent opportunistic infections, ensures personal hygiene of each child and also maintains their medical reports. This helps in getting them appropriate treatment and quick recovery from illness; though despite all these there will be hospitalization due to the fragile condition of the infected child. In such emergencies, they are treated in hospitals till recovered fully.
Learning Each Day -We subscribe to the view that "Education is a privilege of every child". We take utmost care to educate each child under our care. Every child who is of schooling age is admitted to a school and given proper education. "KUTUMB" is home for these children and they are treated like any other child in a normal home. They are assisted with homework, other school assignments and also made computer literate here.
Moral Values - Since the children taken in our care are deprived of parental guidance, we take it as a responsibility that they do not miss love, affection and necessary guidance. Each child is made aware of his duties and responsibilities towards society, kindness to fellow human beings and respect to elders. To understand the diverse Indian culture and traditions, in "KUTUMB", each child is made aware that the other children living with them are their brothers & sisters. This enables them to enjoy love and companionship of a sibling.
Family Values - To our children, "KUTUMB" is home. However, to ensure that their own family ties and bonding is not lost, they are sent home on holidays to spend time with their parent / guardian/relatives. The family / relatives are made aware about the special needs of the child in our care and thus ensure that the children fully enjoy these short holidays without aggravating their medical condition.
Building The Spirit - To keep them at par with the developing trends and be competitive and disciplined, children are encouraged to participate in various sports and cultural activities. They are made to understand that participation itself is a kind of winning. They also gain general knowledge through newspaper and television installed at "KUTUMB". The children undertake physical exercise as well as yoga regularly in the mornings for an hour so that they can keep themselves fit and energetic.
Breaking Away - The children are given break from studies at least twice a year for rejuvenation and recreation. They are taken on educational tours to historical places, zoos, museums and important landmarks in different cities.
Festivals And Celebrations - Children are made to take part in celebration of different festivals. "SAIUJYAM" make it a point that all major festivals, irrespective of the religion, is celebrated at "KUTUMB". Birthday of each child is also celebrated to make her/him feel special on that day.
